Visnu and Laksmi

In the material world, the Supreme Personality of Godhead manifests three features, known as Karanodakasayi Visnu, Garbhodakasayi Visnu and Ksirodakasayi Visnu. The innumerable universes are generated from the skin holes of the first, Karanodakasayi Visnu, and in each one of the universes the Lord enters as Garbhodakasayi Visnu. From Garbhodakasayi Visnu there is expansion of the Ksirodakasayi Vishnu, the collective Supersoul of all living beings.

The first of these Visnus, Karanodakasayi, after creating innumerable universes, entered in each of them as the second Visnu called Garbhodakasayi. When He saw that within the universe there was only darkness and space, without a resting place, He filled half of the universe with water from His own perspiration and laid Himself down on the same water. This water is called Garbhodaka. Then, from His navel came a lotus flower, which was the birthplace of the demigod Brahma, or the master engineer of the universal plan. Brahma became the creator of the universe, and the Lord Himself took charge of its maintenance.

When Garbhodakasayi Visnu lies on the ocean of Garbha within the universe on the bed of the serpent Ananta, Laksmi, the goddess of fortune, is always engaged in massaging His legs and thighs. Laksmi is the companion of the Lord Visnu and His spiritual potency, and they remain together constantly. Since Mother Laksmi is the Lord’s very precious potency, He cannot exhibit His power without her. It is said in the scriptures, that the Lord and His energy are identical.
